FACING FORWARD
Facing Forward features twenty-eight mothers who have graduated from the Community Health Workers Training Program at San Francisco’s Homeless Prenatal Program. My vision for this project was to show these women as they are today - proud, hardworking and devoted to their families and community. Over four years and through extensive interviews with each woman, I was able to capture their stories. Each woman sat for her portrait with an object they selected that symbolized a turning point in their lives. To many of the women, this exploration was a cathartic experience; to others it was an opportunity to reclaim their history and their success.
The graduates have met their challenges head-on. They have earned a sense of personal pride and accomplishment and are honored through an exhibition of photographs and a book, Facing Forward, which recounts their individual transformations.
